Breast reduction, or reduction mammaplasty, for those women with overly large breasts, can be a real life-enhancing option. This procedure not only gives you smaller, firmer breasts, but will also relieve you from the physical and emotional discomforts of having overly large breasts read more There are however certain criteria a patient must qualify to become a good candidate for breast reduction surgery. The guidelines are as follows:
Patients with pendulous breasts (this means that you have more glandular tissue than fat)
Patients that are thin (thin women tend to have more glandular tissue than fat)
Patients with excessively large breasts (liposuction normally only provides 30-50% reduction in size)
Patients before menopause (during menopause fat replaces glandular tissue)
If any of the above is your case you could be considered a good candidate for breast reduction surgery. However there are other secondary conditions that you have to consider before thinking you might fit the profile for breast reduction surgery. If you have diabetes, poor circulation, heart, lung or liver disease, smoke, have a family history of blood clots, take certain medication, etc., then you have to consult with a surgeon to make sure you can still be considered a good candidate for breast reduction surgery.
The surgery, called mammoplasty, will usually take anywhere from 3 to 4 hours, and depending on each individual case, it might extend one or two more hours. The case is done under general anaesthesia. During a mammoplasty, the surgeon makes an incision that is normally in a keyhole pattern: a circle around the aerola, and two incisions down the breast which will be closed to form one line. Fat and extra tissue is removed. The surgeon then repositions the nipple and areola to a higher position and removes excess skin from beneath the breast.
The scars extend around the nipple, vertically down from the nipple and under the breast. The scars fade with time but tend to be wide scars and are still visible.
Another technique to consider is the Breast Reduction by Liposuction.
